Press Release from St Albans City & District Council (23/03/2018)

Work to upgrade the running track at Westminster Lodge in St Albans is scheduled to begin later this year.

Westminster LodgeBoth the six-lane, 400 metre track and the eight-lane, 100 metre section will be resurfaced with a synthetic material as will areas for field events like the high jump. This follows the replacement of some floodlights which was undertaken last year.

St Albans Striders and St Albans Athletic Club use the track for training and occasional events.

The track, which was opened in 1988, is also used by schools for District sport competitions and by other organisations.

Funding for the project will come in part from S106 payments, money contributed by property developers for community infrastructure.

The track is owned by St Albans City and District Council and managed on its behalf by leisure firm 1Life.

Details of the work were given to a meeting of the Council’s Cabinet on Thursday 22 March as part of an asset management report.

Councillor Julian Daly, Portfolio Holder for Commercial and Development, said: “The Westminster Lodge athletics track is an important venue and I am sure all those who use it will be pleased that the surface is to be upgraded.

“This is just one of a number of projects that the Council is undertaking in the coming months. A lot of hard work goes on behind the scenes to maintain and enhance our assets on behalf of our residents.”
