The weather once again played its part this weekend as the start of Sunday’s Harpenden Half Marathon was delayed in attempt to avoid the worst of the winds and rain that had battered the course overnight.

Over 20 St Albans Striders took part in the local event, with Stephen Hosty finishing second overall (1:26:34) and first in his age category (M40), closely followed by Doug Hobson (1:28:36) in fifth (and second senior male).

Ruth Martin (1:43:45) was the first senior lady to finish (fourth female overall), while Lehna Gardiner (second lady), Karen Sheard (second W40), Nicky Laitner (second W50), Helen Cartlidge (third W40) and Caroline Bailes (fourth W40) also enjoyed top five finishes within their respective categories.

A trio of striders also braved strong headwinds to complete the Brighton Half Marathon on the south coast. Ollie Knight, Gareth Parker, and Paul Geary all completed the course, with Ollie (1:21:09) and Paul (1:36:44) securing PBs in spite of the challenging conditions.

A small band of hardy striders braved even more extraordinary conditions as they took part in the national cross-country championships in Nottingham on Saturday. The course, which featured knee deep stretches of mud, extended over 13km for the men and was conquered by Edward Anders, Colin Braybook and Mike Jack. Carole Jack completed the 8km women’s course.

Finally, serial marathon runner Ian Hirth put in a fantastic performance at the Seville Marathon, crossing the line in 2:52:38 to improve his PB by more than 3 minutes.
